Our History

History is often the arena of God's activity. Indeed He moves
in strange ways, but always his wanders to perform.

The Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church was formed from a split from a little hut/church named True Vine M. B. Church on Railroad Avenue. In 1937, a small group of inconspicuous people left and organized in obedience to the Divine command to begin a church which would be in later years a strong support of the spirit, not only in this state but throughout the nation.

Its beginning was not without growth pains. From within and without, Satan would try the faith of the members. Under Reverend Lawyer Chapman leadership, a one frame building was erected on the Woods Street. With zeal and fortitude the membership forged ahead and replaces the frame structure with another building.

During Rev. Chapman's five year tenure he was able to increase the membership so, until a second building had to be built to accommodate the membership, after several months the church moved to Ash Street.

Rev. Chapman served as pastor until the death angel came in 1942. After his death, Rev. Moore was called to carry out the service for about one year before the death angel came and took him away. But as God would have it, things changed, time moved on, bringing new faces and different tasks.

In 1943, the third pastor, Reverend Ivory was called. He remained for about two years before he resigned. In 1945, the Cherry Grove Church moved to a new location to Rondo Street. "HOBO JUNGLE" later known as the Whitfield Mills Road area .

Rev. L. L. Love was elected the fourth pastor and served for the next 12 years. In 1957, He resigned to pastor the Friendship Baptist Church in Memphis, TN. On October 4, 1957, the Rev. W. C. Davis became the fifth pastor and after ten years of service he resigned to pastor the Truelight M. B. Church in Hattiesburg, MS.

On May 9, 1967, the Rev. H. L. Buckley became the sixth pastor and after two years he also resigned to pastor full-time at the Cade Chapel in Jackson.

On September 14, 1969, the seventh, the illustrious pastor Reverend Doctor Jessie E. Redmond was added to the "roll of pastors". Under this administration the church acquired several properties around the church. The church address changed from 905 Rondo St, 601 Scott St. and to our present address of 1296 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Pastor Redmond served this church until he death on March 10, 2006.

God called our 8th pastor to this congregation in 2006. Pastor Marek D. Walker was elected in December 2006 and installed on January 28th 2007. Under his first year of leadership we grew tremendously with a growth of over 100 new and returning members. He is truly a new leader with a new vision. A vision of Building a T. E. A. M. in Christ! Teaching, Evangelizing Anointed and Ministers of the Word.

It is indeed inappropriate to measure the involvement of these eight pastors only in terms of bricks and mortar. What they gave in service to God is immeasurable. Under their dedicated leadership Cherry Grove has been blessed with an excellent ministry ever moving ahead and constantly trusting God.

This is the Church history of CGMBC. We have come this far by faith. With the Grace of God, the help of our pastors and the dedication of servants, we're working in the spirit of Excellence. We praise God for this place! It is our hope that many more pages of progress will be written in the history of this church.
